The “I Do, We Do, You Do” method is an effective coaching approach that guides managers through a structured progression toward independent performance. First, in the “I Do” stage, the coach demonstrates a specific task or skill, providing a clear example for the manager to observe. This phase sets the standard and allows managers to see the proper execution of the activity in real-time. Next, in the “We Do” stage, the coach and manager work together on the task, allowing the manager to participate actively while receiving guidance and feedback. This collaborative approach builds confidence and solidifies understanding through hands-on practice. Finally, in the “You Do” stage, the manager performs the task independently, applying what they’ve learned. The coach steps back, offering support only as needed, ensuring the manager gains the autonomy and self-assurance required to handle the task on their own. This gradual release of responsibility fosters growth, empowers managers, and builds sustainable skill sets within the team.
